Conservation Commission Minutes 03-10-04
Greenfield Conservation Commission Meeting
March 10, 2004  Minutes

Those present: Karen Day, Karla Allen, Neal Brown, Dario Carrara, and Roger Lessard

New Business:
Dave O’Hara, a land surveyor for Pratt Family Homes, brought a map of a 5 lot subdivision with no wetland impact. Lot 21-2 driveway goes between 2 pieces of wetland. They will need approval of the Planning Board or ZBA because it encroaches on the wetlands buffer. Dave submitted letter from a soil scientist.

The NRI presentation by the UNH students is set for April 21st in the Meeting Room at the Town Office.

Old Business:
Peter Wensberg okayed crossing his property on May 22nd for monitoring the Adams easement.
We’d like to do something for Earth Day. Karen suggested Wings of the Dawn. They have a bird rehabilitator there (Maria Colby) who gives talks and brings live birds.
Another possibility would be Nancy Cowan for falconry. Roger mentioned that some people feel that it isn’t a good thing to see falcons trained to kill but recounted a story about finding a young injured hawk himself and taking it to the Vermont Institute of Natural Science for rehabilitation. They in turn sent it, once it was well, to a falconer to be trained to hunt because it didn’t know how. Since this kind of program can have a happy ending, we will keep it on the list for another time.
In order to do a frog survey, we need to send someone to be trained in Concord. No one seemed interested in doing that so we will remove this from our list.
Karla contacted someone about a program to plant trees on logged land. We weren’t sure how we could do this.
Karla discussed long range silvaculture program. Again we were not sure how we could do this.
NH Lakes Association. We all felt that this would be worth doing. If we can enlist the help of the people on the lakes to keep an eye on what goes on there with envasive species etc. it will help to keep the lakes healthy.
Bob o’links in Lyndeborough. Karla mentioned someone she knows in Lyndeborough that has bob o’links on their property. Karen thought that it would be better to find someone in Greenfield. Sheldon Pennoyer has some so we can ask him next summer. He has some work that he is doing there this year so we can wait.
Wildflowers or butterflies in August. Karen knows someone who could do a great wildflower or butterfly program but we must first identify places to hold them.
Mushrooms in September. Both Karla and Neal know people who could do a mushroom program.
Karla mentioned Project Learning Tree is free of charge and well recommended. She thought it would be too late to do anything with it this year.
Dario did not bring in signs due to other commitments.
The map of the George Proctor property was not located.
